About the Initiative

At the heart of our organization is a vision inspired by the late Honorable Justice Kenneth Kakuru, a devoted advocate for environmental rights. Following in his footsteps, we proudly carry on his legacy through our comprehensive initiative focused on afforestation and reforestation in Uganda.

Honoring a Visionary Leader

Our organization is born out of the profound dedication of Hon. Justice Kenneth Kakuru, who, in 1995, founded Greenwatch, a non-governmental organization committed to upholding the right to a clean and healthy environment in Uganda. His passion for environmental advocacy and conservation left an indelible mark, inspiring us to continue his work.

The Kenneth Kakuru Tree Planting Initiative is more than just a tree planting organization; it's a living testament to the enduring legacy of environmental champion, Justice Kenneth Kakuru. As the founder of Greenwatch, a prominent Ugandan NGO, Justice Kakuru dedicated his life to fighting for environmental justice and empowering communities.

The Initiative, established in his memory, draws direct inspiration from Greenwatch's core values. It recognizes the crucial role trees play in a healthy environment and directly addresses the deforestation that plagued the landscapes Justice Kakuru fought to protect. Each planted sapling embodies his unwavering commitment to a greener future for Uganda.

Testimonials

Frank Muramuzi, Executive Director - National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE)

"I got to know the Late Justice Kakuru in 1997, and we became friends. He later provided legal services for both me personally and for NAPE, the organization I work with. Most of the cases were public interest litigation cases defending the environment. He offered this service at no cost, showing he was never money-minded but always reliable and efficient.

His passion for the environment was evident, and he encouraged me not to give up on advocating for environmental justice. He even invited me to make presentations at lawyers' expert meetings, despite my not being a legal expert.

Whenever we met at social gatherings or official meetings, he was always smiling. One of his quotes, especially when we lost environmental cases in courts of law, was, 'Let the judges do their work, but the environment will judge them in the future, even when we are gone.' He performed his duties without fear or favor.

Keep resting in peace, my friend."
